2017 Volkswagen Passat Review

Volkswagen has built a business on offering cars that are fun in every respect, from the way they look to the driving experience they offer. The company experienced a few difficulties recently, but it's back in style this model year with the new Passat leading the charge.

This sporty little sedan has just about everything drivers have come to expect from the German manufacturer: the best in European design combined with outstanding all-American touches that'll make drivers in Greenville, New Bern, and Wilson more than happy. Explore the features, trim levels, options, performance, and packages available with the new 2017 Volkswagen Passat, and learn where to take a test drive.

2017 Volkswagen Passat

The Passat has much to offer, especially for a sedan that hasn't seen a major redesign in five years. The company has rightly settled on the, "don't fix it if it isn't broken" model of sales for this great car. It offers tons of room, not just for passengers, but for trunk space, as well. It delivers a supremely quiet and refined ride, especially on the highway, where the 4-cylinder turbo engine grants athletic acceleration.

This model year, Volkswagen has discontinued the 2017 SEL trim level, but has kept the SEL Premium trim. Equipment that was previously available with the SEL has been redistributed to other option packages and body style levels.

Convenience and Technology

There are four core trim levels in the new Passat. The base level is the S, and it's followed by R-Line, SE, and SEL Premium levels. At the base trim, you get automatic headlights, power accessories, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an infotainment system driven by a 5-inch touchscreen and featuring Bluetooth®, six speakers, CD player, auxiliary port, and USB port. Safety-wise, you get a rearview camera, cruise control, and Frontal Crash Warning and Mitigation via automatic braking.

Stepping up to higher trim levels gets you tons of additional features, which include heated exterior mirrors, paddle shifters on the steering wheel, power seat adjustments, heated seats, larger touchscreen, and the VW Car-Net system, which allows app integration via MirrorLink, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The system includes up to eight speakers and a Fender Premium Audio system.

You can also get features like automatic wipers, blind spot monitoring, auto-dim mirrors, parking sensors, remote start, GPS navigation, automated parking, optional lighting packages, and more.

Performance and Safety

The base 1.8L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine puts out 170 horsepower and features very quick acceleration while maintaining an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 combined MPG-impressive statistics. It's also possible to upgrade to a 3.6L V6, which delivers 280 horsepower and has an EPA-estimated 23 combined MPG fuel economy.

Safety-wise, the Passat gives everything you'd want in a modern vehicle. At the base level, you get features normally associated with premium trims, like Frontal Crash Mitigation. It gets a 5-Star Safety Rating from government crash tests, and an overall top Good score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
