When it comes to compact cars that offer great looks, tons of convenience, and are just fun to drive, the name Volkswagen is synonymous with the sector. The latest model year of the Volkswagen Jetta heralds a return to the forefront of great sedans by a leading European car manufacturer that's practical without sacrificing enjoyment.

Drivers in New Bern, Greenville, and Wilson already know that Volkswagen produces great vehicles, and many are interested in how the new Jetta will perform in the real world. Check out our review and overview of the features, options, and packages available on the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta, and learn where to take a test drive.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta

While Volkswagen is known as one of the greatest German auto makers out there, the new 2017 Volkswagen Jetta is more distinctly American than its other VW cousins. It offers tons of room inside, to the level that those behind the wheel might feel like they're in a full-sized sedan instead of a compact car. The 4-cylinder engine gives surprising power and great efficiency, and the technology is in line with all the latest offerings.

This year, you get a rearview camera as standard equipment, an upgraded infotainment interface and features, and more driver-assist features at lower trim levels than before. The Hybrid model has been discontinued this year.

Technology and Convenience

The four trim levels of the Jetta are the S base level, SE, SEL, and GLI. At the base level, you get a great suite of features unavailable on many competing compact cars. These include fog lights, LED daytime running lights, keyless entry, power accessories, and an infotainment system that's powered by a 5-inch touchscreen interface. The infotainment system gives you Bluetooth®, a CD player, auxiliary jack, and USB port, as well as four speakers. In terms of safety, you get a rearview camera and cruise control.

At higher levels, you can step up with extra technology like heated seats, keyless ignition, remote start, heated washer nozzles, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Car-Net App-Connect integration, upgraded 6.3-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio tuners, automatic wipers, automatic climate control, power seats, GPS navigation, six speakers, parking sensors, enhanced Fender audio, and more.

Safety and Performance

At the base level with its 1.4L 4-cylinder engine, the Jetta gives you 150 horsepower, 184 lb-ft of torque, and an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 32 combined MPG. A turbocharged 1.8L engine kicks it up to 170 horsepower and EPA-estimated fuel economy of 29 combined MPG. Finally, the 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine gives you 210 horsepower, 207 lb-ft in torque, and an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 combined MPG.

Safety-wise, the Jetta delivers a fine suite of features as described above. It scored five stars in federal government testing, and got a top rating of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in overall safety. These top scores make the Jetta a great choice for safe driving.
